SECCC #3, Conyers, GA: Collegiate Mountain Bike Racing

Union College and Lees-McRae battled it out over the weekend at round #3 of the SECCC mountain bike season at Georgia Tech. The race was held on the same trails used for the 1996 Olympics, and served as an ideal venue for the southeast’s top collegiate mountain bikers to duke it out.

Due to an unfortunate bus mechanical, Lees McRae arrived too late on Saturday to contest the time trial or short track. In their absence, Union dominated the front end of the men’s and women’s fields. On the men’s side Wesley Lamberson (Union) took a solo win, while his teammate Brad Nelson won the dual slalom. Another Union rider, Maria Esswein, took her first ever dual slalom win in women’s A, while in the women’s short track Warren Wilson’s Eva Wilson was able to break the Union juggernaut—taking the win with a last lap attack.

Sunday saw a number of Lees-McRae riders assert themselves in the cross-country. A group of four riders rode clear of the field on the first lap of the men’s A race, with Brad Perley (Lees-McRae) and Zach Winn (Union) among them. Noticeably absent was Victor Alber, who is undefeated in SECCC competition this season but chose not to race in Georgia. By the finish it was Lees-McRae taking the top two spots, with Tanner Hurst (Cumberland) 3rd and Zach Winn taking the 4th spot. On the women’s side Erica Zeveda (Lee-McRae) powered away from the field on the first lap and cruised home for the win. Eva Wilson and Elisa Otter (Union) rounded out the top three.

SECCC riders now get a well-deserved break for the next two weekends before returning to competition at Mars Hill the first weekend in October.
