Peaks Ultra 6 Hour Mountain Bike Race, Pittsfield, Vermont
Written by: Karen Potter
The fifth annual Peak Races 6 hour mountain bike race was held Saturday, July 20 in sunny, 80-degree humid conditions.
While scattered thunderstorms missed the area the day before, the earlier week's rain left some rather muddy conditions. The course was similar to the 2010 version but with a slight change up at the top of the mountain adding approximately a mile to the course making it a 10-mile lap. The lap features some pristine Vermont singletrack and an amazing amount of switchbacks (we're talking more than a 100 switchbacks) making for what would be a difficult climb to the top more tolerable and an amazingly fast, swoopy, grinning-ear-to-ear descent. The men's field took off fast and furious for King of Hill on the first lap and continued to be a tough and agonizing battle for winner Jonny Bold who, after 6 hours, finished just a couple seconds ahead Kurt Schmid, each completing 6 laps.
The women's field had only one solo racer, Karen Potter, who finished 5 laps in 6:14, and was also Queen of the Hill.
