Southeastern Conference Collegiate Mountain Bike Finale - Banner Elk, North Carolina
Lees-McRae and Union College Take Conference Titles
written by: Matthew Williams
The SECCC wrapped up its season this past weekend at
Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. With both individual and team titles on
the line, riders were geared up for a hard weekend of racing, and though rain
had soaked the courses throughout the week, the sun was back in time for the
start of the cross country race on Saturday morning. The technical cross
country course featured a number of steep, punchy climbs, followed by technical
descents with plenty of wet roots and rocks. It was a true "east coast” course
and favored an all around rider for the win.
In the women’s race is was New Hampshire native Eva Wilson
(Warren Wilson College) who produced the upset of the weekend—taking the win
over Kara Uhl (Union) and Lees-McRae’s Erica Zaveta. Wilson continued her
stellar weekend by taking second behind Zaveta in the short track and 4thin the dual slalom. Wilson also secured the Division 2 women’s omnium title,
while Zaveta took home the Division 1 title.
On the men’s side it was Lees-McRae’s Kerry Werner who
continued his dominance in endurance events—winning both the cross country and
the short track in convincing fashion. Despite his best efforts though Werner
could not pull off a win in the individual omnium. He was beat out by Victor
Alber (Florida), who took home the Division 1 omnium thanks to top 3 finishes
in the cross country and short track, as well as a stellar result in dual
slalom. Wesley Lamberson (Union) locked up the omnium title for Division 2.
All that remained were the team titles, which were all but
decided coming into the weekend. Union College and Lees-McRae had dominated
conference competition all season long, so it was no surprise to anyone when
they won the Division 2 and Division 1 crowns respectively on Sunday afternoon.
Next up is Collegiate National Championships at Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico.
